Legal research is generally the process of finding an answer to a legal question
or checking for legal precedent that can be cited in a brief or at trial. 
Practically, every lawsuit, appeal, criminal case, and legal process  requires
some amount of legal research.
An Advocate may review statutes, secondary authority  and  caselaw with a
similar fact pattern can give the attorney an idea of before deciding how to
proceed with the case.
Similarly, a corporate lawyer may conduct legal research in order to determine
whether a proposed new policy would expose the company to liability. This may
include research into building codes, employment laws, or federal environmental
regulations.
The advantages of legal research are the lawyer’s understanding and analysis
of a case often begin in the research stage when he identifies the relevant
facts and determines the legal issues that must be researched. As they find
seemingly relevant legal materials, they must understand them and how they apply
to the facts of their case.
